bee keepers experience

The BERUDEP bee-keepers experience is a flexible itinerary designed for those who have a knowledge of bee keeping and want to learn from the locals about African bee keeping and to share their knowledge with people who use beekeeping as their main source of income.

Below are a few examples of how you can make up your itinerary - let us know your preferences and we will tailor make your wishes into a personalised itinerary. Mix the following full day activities with non-bee keeping activities of your choice such as hiking or horseriding...

Sample bee keeping activities:

Traditional Bee Keeping

Watch a traditional bee keeping video about the pygmies who traditionally harvested honey from the trees (even still do). Listen to a theoretical explanation of the process involved, have the experience of building a traditional hive and see first hand the disadvantages over the modern method currently being introduced in Cameroon.

KTBH hive building

Learn how to build a modern KTBH hive using local tools and materials and spend the morning constructing one or more hives. Join a bee keeping group for lunch to present the hive(s) to the group and help reduce poverty for a few who work hard to help themselves through the practise of bee keeping. Spend a few hours discussing the differences of both modern and traditional bee keeping with the group and teach and learn about your hobby, which is an important occupation in Cameroon.

Apiary visit

Visit a famous apiary in the North West province. Learn about the differences between African bees and other species, understand the importance of bee keeping for the hilly environment of NW Cameroon, taste the honey from the area and share your knowledge with the local bee keepers.

BERUDEP bee experience

Begin at the BERUDEP headquarters in Belo and learn a little about BERUDEP objectives in poverty alleviation. Learn how compatible bee keeping is with agro forestry, health, social development and poverty alleviation. See visual presentations about how BERUDEP operate and their successes and improvement over the years. Taste BERUDEP honeys and take BERUDEP medicinal tea with the staff and technicians. Finish with a visit to a BERUDEP apiary and see the theory in practise.

Volunteer experience

Purchase agro forestry seedlings from BERUDEP and walk the 2 or 3 hours through the hillside valleys and beautiful scenery to arrive in time for lunch put on by a local bee-keeping group. Present your seedlings to the group and help them to plant on surrounding farms or in their apiary. Use this time to get to know the beekeepers and see how beneficial your small token gift really is is. Return to your accommodation in town descending back through the small villages.

Home stay with a bee keeping family

Choose a family from a diverse range of interest and cultures: Moslem or Christian, near or far, old or young, in the hills or the valleys….. Stay a few nights with a family whose culture is rooted in hospitality to strangers. Experience the joy you bring simply with your presence, visit their apiary and taste their honey while relaxing in a home where you will experience unique food, traditions and beautiful tranquil scenery. Build a relationship while sharing your knowledge and learning first hand about the country you are visiting.
